It was most certainly a better time imo. We weren't on the brink of a civil war in the early 2000s. Social media was barely even a thing until 2004 and even then it was about connecting with friends and meeting people. Not spreading propaganda, hate, lies etc.. There wasn't massive eruptions of violence all across the country. I could go on and on how 2000-2008 was a better time in this country than what it has been in the last 4 years. Better yet 2000-2016 was a better time

In the simplest terms that made it better, people got along. People talked about things. I understand what you are saying and I know you are going to bring up some other points that contradict what I'm saying but life was easier and people were not hating each other like they are now in such a widespread manner

    We weren't in 2016, either
Social media has nothing to do with President. Propoganda has been spreading since 1997.
Violent crime is actually lower than in 2000-2008. There were mass shootings in 2000-2008. 9/11 was in 2001.
Mass eruptions of violence? You need to lay off the propoganda. The majority (93%) of protests were peaceful.

Life may have been easier for you and that is a privilege you have. 2000 to 2008 was hell on me. I had a breakdown. So, I can say with confidence that your perception is anecdotal.
The divide did not suddenly appear with Trump. It's always been there. I was living as a conservative Rebublican Mormon for 3 of those years. And all.the hate was there. Just not in the open.
The injustice faced by minorities were swept under the rug of society.

I knew I should have deleted my reply. Just reading all of this was exhausting. Why do you have to argue about everything? Like seriously EVERYTHING.

I never said anything about social media having anything to do with the President. Changing what I said to fit your narrative. I stated how its used to spread propaganda unlike when it started, it was for connecting with friends.

I never said the divide against the nation wasn't always there but it sure has had gasoline added to the fire! So there you go assuming again. You accuse of me anecdotal and then go on to talk about your personal experience...umm...okay. Thats anecdotal. I was talking as the country as a whole, not my experience. Im well aware of the shootings and the war and everything else that happened.

You're right, we weren't in 2016 but it sure was starting to get bigger when Trump was elected. I agree all the hate was there previously.

Why do you bring up 9/11? I cant think of another time when the country came together more than the days after 9/11. That was an outside terrorist attack. It was not Americans fighting with each other within this country.

Not talking about people protesting. Im talking about these hate groups going out of their way to harm people. Please don't speak for minorities like you're an advocate or have the experience

I need to lay off the propaganda? Enlighten me, what propaganda am I spreading right now? Also, I started it off with "IMO"

But you're right, I remember people walking down the streets armed with AK's ready for a war to break out in any town America in the 2000's or waiting for an excuse to shoot someone (sarcasm)

You disagree the country as a whole wasn't getting along better than today?

I mean you need to qualify what you’re considering “massive violence.” Social media only amplifies what people already thought back then. Yeah it’s shocking that people haven’t made a mass exodus from the current Republican Party because Trump is openly more racist and dumb but framing the times around the Iraq War and housing crisis as “better” seems pointless.

I am not arguing about everything. YOU quoted my post and told ME I was wrong. I was discussing Bush vs. Obama performance – hence not believing social media had any relevance to MY post YOU quoted. That isn’t me changing the narrative, that is you not reading the context of my post.

As far as anecdotal, my personal comment was to disprove your “it was easier for people” point and drive home anecdotal. IF you really want evidence, I CAN provide how the era you describe as easier was actually very hard for a large portion of American society.

9/11 was violent regardless of who caused it. AND some of the terrorists had been living in America for some time. You claimed the country wasn’t VIOLENT during Bush. You are wrong. It was. Also, after 9/11 Muslim hate crimes increased ten fold and it was extremely violent.

I can speak about anything I want you self-righteous prick. Fine, not protests, but hate groups. There were hate groups in 2000-2008. There were 602 groups attacks documented in 2000 and increased to 926 in 2008. 54% increase. You are seeing the administration through rose colored glasses and you are incorrect. I didn’t say you were spreading propaganda. BUT, you are buying into a narrative where atrocities and turmoil of the past are eradicated to fit a current narrative.

This would be an example of buying into the narrative. While isolated instance have occurred, it isn’t a wide spread problem. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE is Trump's base being given a voice. They were there before, they are just more vocal and seen. BUT the country didn’t suddenly become this way and has never been some sort of great and fair nation.
